Karl Raack resides in Chicago’s Historic Lincoln Square where many of his murals may be seen in the neighborhood. Located on Lincoln Ave., the well known Chicago Brauhaus restaurant, the popular Huettenbar, the Greek restaurant Barba Yanis, & the exterior facade above Spex are public places where several of Karl’s murals are located. At Leland and Western three panels, mounted on a deck, consisting of historic German scenes were commissioned by a private patron & are visible from the street. In the residential area at Rockwell and Leland is an 8’ by 24’ neighborhood mural capturing the essence of Lincoln Square. The popular Laschet’s Inn located in North Center is another restaurant where Karl’s artwork enhances the traditional German style interior. Moving on to the Chicago Bronzeville neighborhood, Illinois Institute of Technology has twelve of Karl’s murals in various buildings throughout the campus.
In addition to public murals, Karl also has murals and paintings in private residences around Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Several of these murals have been in collaboration with his wife, Claudia Raack, whose career is interior design.
Karl’s passion for painting started at an early age in an art studio at his grandmother’s house. During his college years he studied art at Valparaiso University. After graduating from college, Karl briefly taught at Lanchester Polytechnic in Coventry, England. This was a work study program in conjunction with Valparaiso University. Karl continued his studies in Hamburg, Germany where he attended the notable art school, Hochschule für Bildende Künste ( University of Visual Arts of Hamburg ) dating back to 1767. Two of his teachers, Richard Hamilton, a well known British Pop Artist and Rudolf Hausner, an Austrian surrealist were positive influences on his art work.
Returning to the United States, Karl applied his skills and talents to painting on canvas, black and white illustrations for commercial and private artwork. Many of his projects in addition to painting & murals, have included decorative painting and faux finishing, both commercial and residential. Adding to his list of accomplishments is the design and painting on glass for 12 stained glass windows, including a painted mural for a Lutheran Church in Missouri.
